The 2013 matric results capture the achievement ONLY of those who wrote the Matric exams in 2013: the class of 2013 started Grade 1 in 2002 as a large group of 1 261 827 learners.
Only 562 112 of these learners wrote their matric exams, that’s less than half of those Grade 1s sitting down to write Matric!
In real terms, that means that only 14 out of 100 learners who went to school in 2002 were eligible to do a diploma or degree at a tertiary institution.
What happened to the other 86?
When someone lacks an education, they lack a powerful, powerful weapon. So, we’re not just asking you to help learners to read and write and do maths, we’re asking you to give them the “weapons”, the tools that they need to change their lives and their worlds.
We need to invest in education otherwise we’re sending our young people into the country and the economy without the resources necessary to fight. We’re setting them up for failure. Instead of strength and power, they have fear and uncertainty. Will they make it through this battle? Can they ever succeed?
If you’re up for the challenge of creating successful educational environments, spend a year with us in primary and high schools across the Western Cape. Tutoring with Year Beyond will make a real impact in the lives of our learners. We’re aiming to keep those Grade 1s in school all the way up to Matric; from literacy and numeracy in primary schools, to English, Maths and homework support in the high schools.
We’ve got the support from the schools, from all the relevant government departments, from the learners and their parents: all we need are smart and sparky volunteers to make this all happen…. That’s you.
