YearBeyond is the academic pillar of an existing after school programme run by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, namely the MOD programme. It is currently only offered in the Cape Metro.
The selection of schools is based on the schools interest, availability of resources, availability of volunteers and an assessment of the school management capacity.
Participating schools are required to sign a MOU which requires them to avail the school premises, library and computer lab and school security staff after normal school hours until 6pm daily.
Note: New schools are only engaged at the start of each calendar year. Due to fiscal constraint no new schools will be added in the 2017 calendar year.
Parents are required to give consent for their children to attend the programme. They are also encouraged to support their children in their learning journeys through parent meetings and on-going feedback to parents.
"The YearBeyond programme has made a huge difference in the school. In just 6 months the teachers have seen a growing confidence in the learners in maths, reading and writing. The programme with its use of tablets, educational games and the Lego club, makes learning fun. This has resulted in more learners wanting to be part of the programme and even more parents wanting to keep their children in the programme throughout the school holidays."
