About UsA partnership for improved educational outcomes

YearBeyond or YeBo is a partnership between the Western Cape Government and numerous NGOs aimed at improving educational outcomes and encouraging a culture of volunteerism.

The programme aims to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes, inspire a culture of learning, stem school dropouts and improve matric results. It also aims to build bridges between communities and expand the horizons and skills of participants.

The programme provides volunteer tutors (aged 18 – 25) as peer educators after normal school hours. These volunteers offer literacy, numeracy and homework support.

The programme is run in selected schools with the Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme, adding an academic pillar to the MOD programme. The core partners are Action Volunteers Africa (AVA), IkamvaYouth, Shine, Edunova, and the Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert Leadership Institute at Stellenbosch University.

MOD Centres

The Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme is run by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. The Programme operates on selected school premises, called a MOD Centre, from 2 – 6pm offering a range of after-school activities to learners.

2015 in numbers

In 2015 Year Beyond was operating in 16 metro schools creating opportunities for just under a 100 volunteers in the greater Cape Town area and supporting 1 500+ learners. Over the next few years the programme will grow and engage 250 volunteers across the Western Cape working in 50 schools, supporting over 5 000 learners.
